NAMD Joins Plans and Providers in Sending Letters to Biden and Congress Seeking Additional Resources for Medicaid Programs Following the End of the COVID-19 Public Health Emergency
On February 8, 2021, NAMD joined plan and provider associations in sending letters to President Biden and Congress requesting additional federal resources to meet the needs of Medicaid members during and after the COVID-19 pandemic.
Throughout the pandemic, Medicaid has provided essential health care services to millions of Americans. Congress has provided state Medicaid programs with an enhanced federal match during the COVID-19 public health emergency, so long as state programs meet certain “maintenance of effort” requirements. However, these federal resources will expire when the federal emergency declaration ends.
On February 8, 2021, NAMD sent letters to President Biden and Congressional leaders requesting additional federal resources during and after the COVID-19 pandemic. Specifically, NAMD requested:
- An extension of the enhanced federal Medicaid match for one year beyond the end of the COVID-19 Public Health Emergency
- A gradual return to the normal Medicaid match over no fewer than three quarters following this additional year of enhanced match
- An additional increase to the current 6.2 percentage point federal Medicaid match enhancement
