Alanna Dancis currently serves as interim Medicaid Director, overseeing the provision of services for more than 800,000 members enrolled in four managed care health plans and a fee for service program.
Prior to her current role, Dr. Dancis served as Chief Medical Officer (CMO) for the New Mexico Medicaid program since April 2022, becoming the first Nurse Practitioner in the nation to hold a Medicaid CMO position. She oversaw all clinical, pharmacy, and quality bureaus and was a key liaison to state agencies, community partners, and provider organizations, advancing initiatives that improve health outcomes and bring innovative benefits to New Mexicans.
Before joining state government, Dr. Dancis was the Medical Director and a primary care clinician at the Senior Health Clinic within the University of New Mexico Hospital (UNMH) system—the first Nurse Practitioner to serve as a Medical Director in the system’s history.
Dr. Dancis earned her Doctor of Nursing Practice from the University of New Mexico, a Master of Science in Nursing from the University of Pennsylvania, and a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Thomas Jefferson University. She lives in Albuquerque with her son, a spirited Corgi, and an impressive collection of 25 houseplants.
