According to federal law, states must offer specific required health care benefits, while having the flexibility to include additional optional benefits. Examples of mandatory benefits include inpatient and outpatient hospital services, physician services, and laboratory and x-ray services, among others. Examples of optional benefits include prescription drugs and physical therapy.
